My feet are not growing!

Lillian seems to have recently hit a growth spurt. We have been lucky that she has usually been about 6 months behind her age in clothes (at one year she could still wear 6-9 month clothes). Just now it seems that 24 month shirts are a bit short on her and some of her 2T pajamas are snug. Her bottoms are bit hard to buy - the 18 month size usually fits her great in the waist or is a bit loose but they are too short. The 24/2T pants fall off of her hips, yet she REFUSES a belt. I think REFUSES might not describe it well enough - she falls onto the floor screaming, "No belt. I don't want a belt!" and when you try to pick her up, she just falls down again until the belt comes off. She then screams because her pants begin to fall down! The shoes must quickly be put on to stop the screaming.

A few weeks ago, I bought Lillian a new pair of sandals, a size 5. The sandals were too small so I got a size 6 which fit her. The tennis shoes she wears almost every day are a size 4 so we figured we needed to get her a new pair. So we set off to the store in search of shoes. When we got to the shoes, we found a nice pair with real laces and tried to get them on her feet. Lillian was not into trying on shoes that day. She started to fuss.

Mistake #1 - Thinking I would reason with her and she would comply I told her that her feet were growing and we needed to get her a bigger size. This led to a series of screams and hysterics that went like this : "No, my feet are not growing. No my feet not grow. Hold me mommy; my feet not grow, etc."

Mistake #2 - Trying diffuse the situation, I told her that her other tennis shoes were getting worn out and tearing. This statement just set her off in a whole other tantrum like, "My shoes not tearing!"

We ended up leaving the store with the pair of new tennis shoes and figured we would try them on at home. When we did attempt that, we got the same results as in the store. The new shoes went back to the store and we have not tried out any new ones since. This was a few weeks ago and at least twice a week Lillian will ask "Are my feet growing?" We have learned to say, "Lillian your feet are perfect. Do you want your feet to grow?" Of course she says no and we pretend that they are not getting bigger as we shove her feet into her tiny size 4 tennis shoes!

Just last week as were walking up a flight of stairs, she looked at me and said, "Mommy are my hands still tiny?" Again I just said, "Your hands are perfect." I don't know where she gets this stuff from!!

We hate to burst your bubble Lillian, but your feet are growing:

Molars

Lillian's first two-year molar is popping through. As with all her teeth, the first one is on the top.

Dry!

On occasion, Lillian will wake up from her naps with a dry diaper. The longest stretch has only been two days.

Today she had a dry diaper when I went into get her. She didn't go potty before nap so I was expecting a very wet diaper. She went down at 1:20 pm and I got her up at 4:00 pm. The last time she went potty before nap was at 11:00 am so that was FIVE hours she was dry!!

Lillian Art Gallery

Lillian has been taking an art class Saturday mornings with Daddy. To properly display her works of art, we now present you with the Lillian Art Gallery:

Daddy says it is hit or miss with the class. Like most things, if Lillian is not into something, she is not shy about letting everyone know. She likes to use the "I have to go potty" line several times to get out of class when she does not want to participate (she also uses this line in KinderMusik, dance class and gymnastics.) She did have to go into time out during class today because she hit Daddy but once she saw that the glue was out, she was ready to go back in!

Dinner Conversations

Friday night we went out to eat. A rarity these days because Lillian does not like to behave in restaurants. We brought along our backup of Potato Head Spuds for her to play with and it went well until the very end. It took forever for our food to come and by that time she had already finished hers. She was tired and the toy store next door that I went to take her to was closed and that was the end of that. We quickly left and got her to bed.

But while we were there she did say this: "That's my daddy's beer. That's my mommy's beer. I don't have beer, I have water. I don't need beer." While she was stating that she did not need beer, she was waving her hand back and forth.
