Radio DJ

Lillian finally will let us play the radio in the car. Before it was always one of her Cd's playing. She will listen to a few of my Cd's (usually The Black Crowes in the car) but so far she seems to go for the pop music. And here are her currents favs:

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

The Love Story song she will actually sing all by herself and is always teaching daddy the words to it (I don't know why he hasn't picked up the words yet!)Hopefully her tastes in music will grow to a much more eclectic mix like her parents.

The perfect pants

Lillian gets sweaty fairly easily, usually her feet and the back of her neck are the main culprits. When she does get sweaty she likes to remove any clothes she might have on and either change clothes or run around in the nude. When she wakes up sweaty at nap she gets upset thinking she has wet the bed. And if she gets sweaty during the bedtime ritual - usually because she is fussing and fighting EVERY STEP OF THE WAY, she will want new clothes. In particular new pants and a certain type of pants.

Sweat pants. Yes Lillian wants to wear sweat pants if she gets sweaty. We have tried telling her that sweat pants are actually thicker and therefore hotter than her pajama pants, but she thinks that if she is sweaty, she needs to wear sweat pants. So on go the sweat pants.

She has one pair that is her idea of pant perfection: a pale pink size 12 months pair of sweat pants. Otherwise known as "the perfect pair of pants." And the kicker is that the size 12 months sweat pants fits her GREAT in the waist, just very short in the length. She has about 5 pairs of sweat pants, ranging in size from 12 months to 24 months, that will work when she is sweaty.

And when we are trying to convince her to put on pants to go outside on her play set, she will say, "I will go and find the perfect pair of pants." And she comes out with sweat pants. And if the pale pink ones are clean those are the ones she will wear.

"What are you?"

This is the question Lillian posed to her babysitter Miss Cindy this week.

Lillian - "What are you?"
Miss Cindy - "What do you mean?"
Lillian - "What are you? Are you an omnivore? My mommy is a vegetarian."

Lillian knows these words from some of her magazines and from me explaining to her why I don't eat meat. It has been awhile since we had a discussion about these things but I guess she was curious as to what Miss Cindy is.

New fav hangout

The local arboretum is becoming one of the favorite places for Lillian and I to go in the mornings. Lots of room to run around and explore, pretty plants and flowers to look at and it's free. Today we ended up there again.

Next showing at 8:00 pm

Lillian likes to line all of her critters that sleep in the bed with her against the bars of the crib. When she woke up from her nap today, she walked into the living room (dragging a blanket, pillow and her bedtime bear in a sand bucket) where Joe and I were and announced, "You know why I like to line up my critter in my bed? Because I show them movies in there. A movie about a girl who sleeps all night." When I asked her to tell me what the movie was about she said, "I can't because there are too many words."

Earth Day Celebration

Today one of the local museums had an Earth Day Celebration. We did not stick around for too long as we had already some time at the farmers market but Lillian did get a chance to fish and I finally got my tattoo!

She also "shared" a lollipop with daddy which meant she asked daddy to share his lollipop and then proceeded to eat his as well as hers.

We stopped to have lunch downtown which turned out to be Lillian's first trip to a bar, the Raleigh T*mes Bar. I made her pose for pictures to document it. She ate fried green beans and fish and chips from daddy's plate. Walking back to the car, there was a dog festival going on that had live music. She wanted to stay and listen to the concert rather than go home and take a nap. We won the going home part but the nap is still in question.

Picnic Old Avenue Style

Tonight one of the nearby shopping centers was having a free concert. It was such a nice day and for once Joe did not have to go to the comedy club we decided to go and have a picnic. Lillian got very excited over this idea and helped me prepare. By help I mean she opened up the picnic blanket, took off her pants and panties and rolled around on it while listening to the soundtrack to Grease. She did help make our dinner though: BLT's with guacamole, pita chips and hummus, grapes, blackberries and fizzy water. She even had to wear a hat that she was calling the concert hat.

The band, Old Avenue, was already playing when we got there and Lillian wanted to eat as soon as we settled in. That is to say she ate a piece of bacon, took a chip with hummus and started to dance around and play with other children. She was actually going up to older children, holding their hands and playing with them. She would play then come back to us to get a bite of something or a drink of fizzy water then rush back out to play.

Of course lots of people had ice cream so she wanted some as well. After we bribed her to eat a few more bites, she got ice cream. This is the child scoop - it's huge!
On our way back home, the most amazing thing happened. Lillian said, "I sure had a good time at the concert." This NEVER happens. Anytime you ask Lillian if she had a good time her answer is always NO.

Bumps in the Road

Just a quick recap from the last week or so:

The Good:
Lillian went to her second dentist appointment. We had a few tears shed this time - only because she knew what to expect. She does not like the scraper tool and was not shy about letting the hygienist and dentist know that. But all in all she was good. Much better than some much older children there. Lillian had her first set of X-Rays taken and all her adult teeth seem to be in order.

Easter came and went. No big pictures this year but Lillian did voluntarily go up to the Easter Bunny at the mall for a picture. She has always been a bit wary of those things but once she sat on the bunny's lap, I knew I had to fork over the $20 to document it. Lillian got to hunt for eggs in the house and received Max and Ruby stuffed animals and a book. Yes we do not give her candy for Easter.

The Not So Good:
Lillian fell off her play set and busted her lip. One second she is swinging and the next she is flat on the ground screaming. When I pick her up, blood is coming out of her mouth and nose. I start to clean her up to try and check out the damage, make sure no teeth got knocked out and the whole time she is screaming, "Help me mommy! Will it heal? I want it to heal!" The right side of her face swelled up in an instant and she had huge wounds on the inside of her lip. After a frantic call to Joe and pediatrician, I got her all cleaned up, gave her some M*trin, an ice pack and we went back to read stories before nap. She went down for her nap easy and I think I checked on her at least 5 times in a hour to make sure she was still doing OK. By the time she woke up, the swelling was all but gone. That was Monday and today she only has a bit of a scab left on her nose and some more healing to do inside of her lip.

Because of the fall I had been giving her M*trin before nap and bedtime and yesterday was no different. When she woke up from her nap, she did not want to leave her room. So she stayed in there reading books while I folded some laundry in another room. I would call out every couple minutes to see what she was up to. The last time I called out she said, "I'm just rattling my teething tablets." Now she has not had teething tablets in a very long time but I knew the bottle was still on her dresser in a storage container. So I casually make my way to her room to find that she had dragged her pink stool over to her dresser, is sitting on the dresser with an empty bottle of teething tablets AND an open bottle of M*trin AND a liquid medicine measuring cup FULL of the M*trin. I immediately asked her how many cups she had drank and she said, "three, five." So I got her off the dresser, took the M*trin away, grabbed the empty teething tablet bottle and called the pediatrician. They told me to call the poison control center. All in all Lillian was fine (I think I walked in on her as she was just starting to drink the medicine)' just very mad that I would not give her more M*trin.

Side note - I had been keeping the M*trin on a shelf above the dresser because she was taking it right before bed and was easy for to get at twice a day. Since then, all medicine has been taken out of the closet and is sitting in a box and a bag hidden away in our closet.

Sorry Elsie

I find myself saying that a lot as Lillian "plays" with Elsie. If only she would learn to hide from 7:30 am - 8:00 pm she would not have to suffer these indignities.
